SCOPE OF MICROBIOLOGY
Microbiology has Various scope; the study of microbiology contributes greatly to the understanding of life through enhancements and intervention of microorganisms. This field day by day increase in demand for microbiologists in India and globally. A microbiologist can working in the area of new diagnostic kits making industry, discover new drugs, teach, research, etc.
Being a microbiologist myself, I can understand the doubts. This is a relatively new field in India. I am pursuing it because I want to go into research field. That is one of the best fields for you. Other than that for studies, after B.Sc. in Microbiology you can do your masters in varied subjects like Microbiology, Biotechnology, clinical research, bioinformatics and agricultural biology, etc. and then options for jobs in these various fields.
For job after M.Sc. Microbiology, you can become a QA/QC analyst's, professor, or as a research associate in various fields like dairy industry, food, pharmaceutical industry, agricultural research, etc.
Career prospects:
Microbiologists can work in the various area of food, pharmacy, biochemistry biotechnology, bio-refinery, environment, pollution control and bioremediation. In the various agricultural field ,microbiologists can also act as environmental and health specialists to study the role of microbes in plant disease, pest control, and nutrition and soil fertility. In the various field of medicine and health care sector, the work is usually associated with diagnosis, prevention and treatment of illnesses associated with microbes.
Some of Career opportunities are
Ø Research Scientist (life sciences)
Ø Research Assistant
Ø Food, Industrial or Environmental Microbiologists
Ø Quality Assurance Technologists
Ø Sales or Technical Representative
Ø Clinical and Veterinary Microbiologists
Ø Medical Technologists
Ø Biomedical Scientist
Ø Clinical Research Associate
Ø Microbiologist
Ø Pharmacologist
Ø Food Technologist
BRANCHES OF MICROBIOLOGY:
Microbiology is a unique subject as the microbes are not only playing useful role in nature through their links in biogeochemical cycles, symbiotic relationship, in maintaining soil fertility, in bioremediation, and as plant pathogens, microbes in biotechnology and as amodel organisms for biochemical molecular and genetic processes but are also providing homogenous experimental material relatively quickly. As a result of their link to several branches of science many branches of microbiology can be identified (and are still growing……)
Some of the established branches are as follows:
v Industrial Microbiology
v Medical Microbiology
v Agricultural Microbiology
v Pharmaceutical Microbiology
v Environmental Microbiology
v Food and Dairy Microbiology
v Soil Microbiology
v Sewage Microbiology
v Aquatic Microbiology
v Marine Microbiology
v Estuarine Microbiology
v Groundwater Microbiology
v Aeromicrobiology
v Exomicrobiology
v Avian Microbiology
